At what level can deep learning be applied towards eliminating the need for skilful experts towards the diagnosis of parasitized or healthy malaria patients in remote parts of the world.

Introduction

Malaria is an infectious mosquito borne disease the is caused by the plasmodium parasite. It is transmitted when an individual is bitten by an infected mosquito. According to the WHO`s 2020 World malaria report, there was an estimated 241 malaria cases and 627,000 deaths worldwide in 2020 (WHO, 2021). About 47,000 of these cases were linked to improper diagnosis and disruptions.

    Malaria is more commonly found in underdeveloped areas where the diagnosis of medical conditions are not easily accessible. The plasmodium parasite works by infecting the liver and multiplying in large numbers then attacking the red blood cells. If this is not diagnosed properly, it could lead to untimely death to the human infected with it. An early diagnosis is essential for the treatment of malaria. The medically accepted form of diagnosis worldwide is the light microscopy technique. Microscopic diagnosis while currently properly is long and tedious and also requires skilled technicians which may take about 15-20 minutes to count all the cells.  A study in Ghana found that there were only 1.72 microscopes per 100,000 population but only 0.85 trained technicians per 100,000 population (Bates, 2004). Due to this unavailability of microscopes and skill technicians, diagnosis are made on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms alone.


Research Aim

Light microscopy remains a good approach to diagnosing malaria however interpretation of the images is labour intensive intensive and limited to the skill level of the microscopist.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks in categorizing microscopic blood smear images as parasitized or healthy. A deep learning approach to malaria diagnosis will limit the need for a human expert and furthermore decrease the cost of equipment and minimize the use of electricity.

This study aims to determine at what level deep learning can be applied towards eliminating the need for skilful experts towards the diagnosis of parasitized or healthy malaria patients in remote parts of the world


Proposed Solutions

Majority of the work related to malaria diagnosis require human expert intervention to aid in interpretation of their results. Attempts made in automating the traditional microscopy has produced very little success as there is still the problem of differentiating the species and determining the parasitic stage. In this research, a deep learning approach is proposed as a viable solution to these problems. By comparing two different deep learning models VGG-19 and ResNet-60 , a smartphone based application will be created to determine which one is more accurate. The figure below is a pictorial diagram of a mobile based solution




Proposed Deep Learning Model


The Convolutional Neural Network Architecture Used here is the Resnet-60. It shows the client that interacts with the server a trained convolutional neural network model. Th architecture can be used to train millions of images. The cell image is given as an input then the convolutional neural network will learn the basic characteristics such as the edges, spots, shape and size. The output results will indicate whether a patient is infected or healthy.

Approximate Computing: Techniques, Challenges and Applications

What if I told you that, the mind-blowing expanse of computing power available in this present day and age could be doubled, or even tripled without us having to physically manufacture more expensive hardware or additional resources? Well, to cut the suspense; this is the benefit of the relatively new concept of “Approximate Computing.” which is rapidly gaining traction and attention as the days fly by.







Approximate Computing aims at optimising execution time, improving performance and energy efficiency by sacrificing the accuracy of computed results.


A typical approximate computing result is the addition of 1 plus 1 which may yield 2.01 but not 2. For many applications, including artificial intelligence and imaging, “almost correct” is good enough, and such computing consumes much less energy.


Promising Areas Where Approximate Computing Seems Practical (Error-tolerant areas)


Digging further into this relatively new concept, every transaction or set of of data processing presents itself with its unique tolerance level of inaccuracy: Radio and digital signal processing, robotics, and machine learning amongst others (Shafique et al., 2016; Venkataramani et al., 2013). However, more areas Approximate Computing seems promising include (should be error-tolerant areas):

Challenges


The uniqueness of every single transaction or problem may pose a challenge in terms of loop perforations as to how many iterations must be made or skipped. Every single transaction presents itself with a tolerance level of inaccuracy. Radio and digital signal processing, robotics, and machine learning amongst others (Shafique et al., 2016; Venkataramani et al., 2013). Therefore, loops, must only be perforated in these areas where tolerance is accepted and not in critical areas such as healthcare which could cause fatal disasters. Looking at it from a different angle, if advanced machine learning could come into place to learn the specific amount of time a specific loop should be iterated, then loop perforation might work in these delicate areas but for now, loop perforation is only limited to areas which can overly tolerate error. In terms of bit-width reductions, which has the potential to reduce up to 37 % of operation bit-width in order to reduce execution times by up to 50%, if it is not done “judiciouslyâ€, then it might lead to misleading results which lessens effectiveness. (IEEE Rebooting Computing Initiative et al., n.d.; (Roy & Raghunathan, 2015).


Applications & Techniques


According to the results of a study carried out by IEEE Rebooting Computing Initiative et al., (n.d); the benefits of approximate computing are compounded when applied concurrently. That is, combined judiciously, the several methods do not considerably diminish the efficacy of one another; so approximate computing should be highly effective when it is combined in areas of high error tolerance, but precise results must be used in areas of low error tolerance. Approximate computing is a contributor to SDG 9 as it fully harvests and utilises computing power and available resources which contributes to industry by helping in saving the overhead costs of purchasing new and more powerful machinery, leaving the older ones redundant. (SDG, 2018). It is also an innovative process, and it uses less infrastructure as compared to precise and accurate computing.


In conclusion, throughout this entire research, the essence of approximate computing in optimising execution time, improving performance and efficiency by sacrificing exactness of results has been made explicit. A fundamental goal of this paper is assessing whether approximate computing could become universally acceptable across our day-to-day life involvements, and this has been made evident by the way in which the smallest embedded systems and microcontrollers could adopt these systems in both their hardware and software resources. Approximate computing techniques are able to reduce the width of variables used in computation to 10-16 bits prior to using the commonly used 32-64 bits to enhance all- around performance gains. Such a system could offer great efficiency and power for multimedia processing over the 64-bit CPUs and GPUs used currently. While many of these initiations are worthy advances, it is still a relatively new area which needs to be deeply explored, tried, and tested especially the subsection of approximate storage in ways to prevent it from being exploited by new malicious attacks. 

From learning about how approximate computing could produce incomplete results if controls are not used judiciously, I recommend not using Approximate Computing thoroughly, but rather in small segments that are not entirely significant in result accuracy but still use weighty processing power.

Application of Blockchain in the Banking Sector

 ABSTRACT

Banks are the sector that hold funds in the world today but they have had issues for the longest time (fraud, slow processes and so on) and the rise of Blockchain has also been very impactful to solving the problems of the banks. Blockchain is an immutable distributed ledger that runs on a peer to peer network and takes records of daily transactions in the network between nodes. This research aims to see how effective blockchain is in the banking sector that means doing extensive reading on the current blockchain systems been used in banks and also giving a recommendation on which blockchain based system is best in solving the issues of blockchain in banks.  



INTRODUCTION

In early history, banks have been the institutions that deal in funds and investments of the society. They given loans and also serve as intemediaries to help customers send transactions from one country to another country. Banking problems sky-rocketed during the pandemic. 

Due to these problems, transactions in the bank have lengthy protocols like using an ID (passport) to collect money that is sent to you, which leaves people stressed and tired. With the emergence of this new technology known as blockchain these issues can be retified.

PROBLEM ANALYSIS

Here are some prblems banks face when using blockchain.

  • Scalabilty
  • Cost 
  • Security
  • Privacy
  • Hard to integrate


Algorand

Algorand is a cryptographic currency that works to best consensus on transactions with a system based on proof of stake.

Merits

  • To be considered as honest, one must follow the protocols as they are given in a cordial manner.
  • It against attacks.
  • It mines the new blocks in seconds.
  • It is fair and trustworthy.
  • It is accurate.
  • It is very secure. 

Demerits

  • Its adoption level is low.

 



Corda 

Corda is a decentralized ledger platform that is used for recording and processing transactions and records.

Merits

  • It helps to record and manage financial information.
  • It setups workflow between firms and organizations.
  • It assists in including regulatory and supervisory observation by selecting the node.
  • It validates transactions between parties and sub groups.
  • It allows the use of consensus mechanisms.
  • It uses industrial tools.
  • It defends the network against attacks.



Stellar

Stellar also known as Stellar Lumens is a permissionless decentralized protocol, for digital currency to fiat money transfers that enables cross border transactions between any currencies.

Merits

  • It can process about 2000 transactions in seconds.
  • The cost of transaction is very low.
  • It supports the use of smart contracts which improve the functionality of the protocol.

Demerits

  • A user must have at least 20 coins in their wallet for it to function.

 




RECOMMENDATION

The suggested blockchain technology that shoould be used in banks is Corda. It creates a way to secure data from users, does fast transactions, assits the entire network with increased efficiency of operations, reduces cost of operations and has a better processing time.



CONCLUSION

The financial sector’s use of blockchain technology is acceptable and addresses all blockchain-related difficulties. The financial industry has also been observed to be the most affected by blockchain. As a result, Corda is preferred solution, as it offers several advantages and appears to have the best use cases in the financiaal sector. The use of money is gradually becoming digitalized, thanks to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Peercion and others. It also shows that there is a need for more blcokchain research in order to find a proper solution to blockchain.

What Are You Researching?


The research is focused on how effective a chatbot application would be in improving healthy behavior in patients. In order to encourage someone to improve their behavior a certain amount of persuasion and motivation is needed. Chatbots are capable of reaching a large number of people but lack the persuasion and motivational skills to encourage people. But what could happen if chatbots could be improved to a point in which they can encourage users? How many lives could be improved with beneficial medical information?


Why Are You Researching It?


The world has many doctors but it has more patients. The challenge in this would be the number of individuals who engage in unhealthy habits, those who are in need of medical assistance but cannot get in quick enough or possess underlying illnesses they may not be aware until too late. To properly address this challenge some medical institutions have developed applications and websites that incorporate chatbots which mainly provide information to users. But what could happen if these chatbot applications could be developed to such a level in which they could persuade the user to stop engaging in unhealthy habits and motivate them to continue in case they begin losing motivation.




How was the research undertaken?


Research information was gathered mainly from articles on Google scholar that focused mainly on the relationship between humans and chatbots, challenges people face with chatbots, human persuasion and the development of a persuasive chatbot applications.

ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµing the relationship between humans and chatbots: Since many websites and apps implement chatbots it has become common to use them. Some studies have shown different issues from both the human and chatbot. When focusing on the human issues it includes an over dependency on the chatbot in some users for medical diagnosis which can at times be incorrect (mainly in chatbot applications that provide medical checkups) and some other users who prefer to engage with a doctor in person and not that interested in using a chatbot. While some issues with the chatbot include incorrect information (mainly in chatbot applications that provide medical checkups), limited responses leading to dissatisfied users who have questions, only available online and a level of distrust from users and medical professionals

ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµing human persuasion: This study focuses mainly on human interaction and how to persuade others to engage in something. There were many studies on these especially in sales. Many stated that a welcoming personality, the ability to assure the customer that they are making the right choice, a well-known brand that they can trust and word of mouth.

ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµing the development of a persuasive chatbot application: The most crucial study of this project focused on how feasibly persuasive a chatbot could be. The application is in fact possible and a few are attempting to develop it. Many big tech companies have chatbot like assistants such as Microsoft’s Cortana, Apples’ Siri, Google Assistant and many more. But a developer named Justine Cassel who is working on a chatbot application with social intelligence. The study shows that despite the difficulty developing such an application it was very successful when interacting with users and with some development could one day be a persuasive chatbot.


Benefits of the Chatbot Application


The application will mainly serve as a digital assistant to users like Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, and many others but in a more personal way. The chatbot will possess different tones of voice and responses to users, human-like interactive skills to help users feel like the chatbot application is capable of being a friend. Despite the difficulty of developing this application, the benefits are too great not to try.



Results and Findings



Some studies conducted have shown that people respond well to chatbot applications when they possess some necessary features. One such study was a chatbot application named Sara. Tagged as the descendant of Alexa and Siri, this chatbot is capable of reading different features of the user in order to respond appropriately. Sara was capable of studying facial expressions, tone of voice, and other features.

Another study of a persuasive chatbot stated that persuasion is an active attempt by one person to change another individual’s mind, beliefs, concept, or attitude. In order to achieve this goal, there are steps that need to be taken starting from assessing the situation and needs of the person being persuaded, building rapport, focusing on benefits, listening to and addressing concerns, accepting the limitations, finding common ground of acceptance, and clarifying terms. These skills comprise both verbal and non-verbal components which help in communication.


Conclusion


The research has shown that a chatbot application can be very effective in persuading individuals. Some companies have already begun developing such advanced chatbots but even they struggle to properly reach that goal. So far very few have developed such a chatbot such as Sara. But with some improvements it is possible to create a chatbot application that can serve as a friend, assistant or guidance support to users. With such a role in users lives they will be able persuade them more effectively.

Introduction 
Artificial intelligence for enrollment could be the up-and-coming age of software planned to improve or robotize parts of talent acquisition. Using an AI in enlisting candidates into organizations is an innovative way in the business climate as of late. AI can be a significantly more compelling method for selecting candidates. With the help of an AI, HR supervisors will enrol individuals with the right ability to get everything done.


What is an AI?

Artificial intelligence mostly known as AI is the simulation or the use of human intelligence processes by computer systems and machines. AI makes use of text mining, natural language processing, and classification algorithms to solve problems.Some examples of  applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision


HOW AI CAN PLAY A ROLE IN RECRUITMENT?

Al can be used to improve recruitment in the following:

  • Initial screening of profiles
  • Planning interview with the assistance of Chatbot
  • Creates tests for the applicants in form of aptitude tests etc.
  • Examines the outcome assuming the applicant would fit into the given job.


Advantages of AI
  • It enhances decision quality.
  • It reduces the cost of consulting experts for problem solving.
  • It provides quick and efficient solutions to problems in narrow area of specialization.
  • It offers high reliability of expert suggestions or decisions.
  • It gathers scarce expertise and uses it efficiently.


When to Develop an AI?

  • The problem cannot be specified in terms of a well-defined algorithm.
  • The problem requires consistency and standardization.
  • The domain or problem area is narrow or limited.
  • When the task is hazardous.
  • The problem involves complex logic or a large number of rules.
  • Human experts have successfully solved similar problems.


Limitations of AI

  • Not widely used or tested
  • Limited to relatively narrow problems
  • Cannot readily deal with “mixed” knowledge
  • Possibility of error
  • Cannot refine own knowledge base
  • Difficult to maintain
  • May have high development costs
  • Raise legal and ethical concerns


Conclusion

An algorithm can replace a recruiter when it comes to sourcing & assessing job candidates, but it can’t when engaging them in interviewing and relationship-building. The study and implementation of AI will help expand and broaden the scope of AI and its limitation in computing. AI will help reduce human error and make the world a much better place, therefore, it cannot replace human resource managers, but it helps significantly make recruitment much better

Introduction


Computer-aided learning refers to the process of obtaining information through the use of computers and their gadgets.

Computer-aided learning is not a replacement for teachers, but rather a supplement. The subject is taught by the main teacher utilizing a computer and other devices, making teaching and learning a more participatory and flexible process. 



Purpose of Research


The goal of this study is to look into and learn more about a new approach to learning that is aided by computers and technology.

This research demonstrates how, in the face of a pandemic, people are reliant only on computer-aided learning.
