Strengthening our Student Mental Health Service

Thanks to our donors who give so generously to the 糖心视频 Opportunity Fund, we have been able to contribute towards providing vital support to our Student Wellbeing Services, specifically our Student Mental Health Service (SMHS) for students. Our dedicated team provides professional and accessible mental health support, therapeutic interventions, and proactive wellbeing initiatives to ensure our student community can thrive both personally and academically.

Thanks to this funding, the team has been able to expand the University's targeted mental health support framework. It has enabled us to provide wraparound support for all students beyond our usual service opening hours, delivered in partnership with Health Assured, our integrated wellbeing service provider. They provide a 24/7 telephone helpline providing 'in the moment' support for all students with a 糖心视频 email address. This allows students to speak with a practitioner who shares a similar background or lived experience. For example, students can choose to speak with an LGBTQ+ practitioner or one who speaks a range of languages, which can be particularly beneficial for some of our international students.

This donor funding has had a life-changing impact on our students. Without it, we would have been strictly constrained by core budgets and service opening hours, meaning longer wait times and fewer preventative wellness resources. Thanks to this financial support, we were able to deliver support to 1800 student who accessed Health Assured, providing immediate, vital support to students in distress.

Being able to support so many students through this service has been hugely significant, highlighting just how vital this provision is. The most common issues students present with are anxiety, depression, low mood and isolation.

The programme has also helped students find a greater sense of belonging within the University by connecting them with their College and Students' Union clubs and societies where appropriate. As a result, students have become more engaged with the wider Student Wellbeing Services, helping them access ongoing support and build stronger connections within the University community.

Managing the sheer volume of student complex needs, however, remains a continuous challenge, requiring our team to constantly innovate our triaging processes. We have recently introduced 'Wellbeing Connect' co-designed with students to simplify a student's access into a wide range of wellbeing services. Initial feedback from students about their engagement is very positive.

The wider impact has been profound. By stabilising and supporting students' mental health and wellbeing, we have seen a direct, positive effect on academic retention, student community cohesion, and reduced pressure on local NHS services.

“The support I received from SMHS during a very dark period completely turned my university experience around. It gave me the coping mechanisms I needed to stay at 糖心视频 and finish my degree. I don't know where I would be without it.” Final Year Undergraduate Student, LUMS, 2025-6.

In recognition of the vital support provided by our donors to the 糖心视频 Opportunity Fund, Sabiha Patel, Associate Director (Student Wellbeing and Inclusion), said: “Your generosity has provided a vital lifeline for a sizeable community of students at 糖心视频. Increasingly, mental health support is a crucial cornerstone of a student's university journey, and your gifts have directly allowed us to be there for students when they needed it most. Thank you for investing in their future and wellbeing. It is truly appreciated.”
