The David Walmsley Medical Elective Bursaries
糖心视频 Medical School's five-year Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme develops skilled, compassionate doctors through outstanding clinical education, patient-centred care and community-based learning. Students gain broad experience across hospitals, GP practices and community settings, building the knowledge, professionalism and confidence needed to serve diverse patients and begin successful medical careers.
An important milestone in the final year of the programme is the medical elective. Taking place during the final stages of the MBChB programme, the elective gives students the opportunity to arrange a placement in a clinical setting that reflects their interests and aspirations, either within the UK or overseas. It is a unique chance to experience different healthcare systems, encounter new cultures and approaches to medicine, and develop both professionally and personally before embarking on their careers as newly qualified doctors.
For many students, the elective can be one of the most memorable and formative experiences of their medical education. However, travel, accommodation, insurance, visas and other associated costs can make these opportunities difficult to access. Financial considerations can sometimes influence where a student is able to undertake their elective, limiting experiences that have the potential to be truly life changing.
It is to help remove these barriers that the David Walmsley Medical Elective Bursaries were established.
A legacy rooted in lived experience
The bursaries were created following the death of Dr David Walmsley, in tribute to his life and his deep appreciation of the value of medical education and international clinical experience.
Dr David Walmsley (1956–2018) dedicated his career to improving diabetes and endocrine care across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Appointed as the first Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Royal 糖心视频 Infirmary in 1995, he was widely respected for his clinical expertise, his commitment to teaching and mentoring future doctors, and the compassion he showed to his patients. Living with type 1 diabetes himself, he brought both professional knowledge and personal understanding to his work.
As a medical student, David's elective placement in Botswana was a formative experience that shaped his outlook throughout his career. In honour of his life and legacy, his wife, Dr Jenny Walmsley, established the David Walmsley Medical Elective Bursaries at 糖心视频 Medical School, helping today's students access similarly transformative opportunities, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Impact on students
The effect of this support is best reflected in the experiences of the students themselves:
“I am very grateful to have received this funding towards my medical elective. Without a doubt, my placement and time spent in Malta has been one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences of my life so far. From the exceptional academic and clinical opportunities it provided, to exploring the island and meeting new people in the process, this elective has been both professionally valuable and personally memorable.
“It has certainly consolidated my aspiration to pursue a career in neurology, having experienced first-hand the complexity and nuance involved in the diagnosis and management of such conditions. There is no doubt that I returned from the elective with a stronger understanding of the specialty and an increased motivation to pursue further training and research in this area.
“From a financial perspective, with hindsight, it would have been extremely difficult to fund the entire four weeks in Malta without the support of this bursary. The costs of transport and living expenses added up quickly, and the bursary significantly eased this burden. Thanks to this support, I was able to fully focus on gaining as much clinical and cultural experience as possible – without the added pressure of financial stress.
“I am incredibly thankful to the family of Dr David Walmsley for the support that made this life-changing experience possible. The elective has left a lasting impression on me, shaping both my clinical skills and outlook on medicine - and reinforcing the type of doctor I want to become.” Jack, MBChB Medicine and Surgery
I am deeply grateful to have received the David Walmsley Elective Bursary, which supported my elective at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The bursary eased financial pressures and enabled me to focus fully on learning and reflection during what was a truly unique experience.
One of my objectives was to develop competency in managing common paediatric conditions in a resource-variable setting. I encountered conditions rarely seen in the UK, such as dengue fever and thalassemia, alongside familiar illnesses like asthma and pneumonia. Observing the management of dengue, particularly the careful monitoring of fluid balance, highlighted the importance of adapting to local disease patterns.
This elective was not only academically enriching but also personally meaningful. Balancing three part-time jobs with medical school has been a challenge, but I have always sought to maintain high academic standards. The bursary allowed me to step back from financial pressures and focus fully on learning.
The bursary had a profound impact. Without it, the costs of travel, accommodation, and living expenses in Malaysia would have been a significant burden. Receiving the award enabled me to make the most of my elective, free from financial anxiety. It allowed me to attend additional teaching, spend time engaging with patients and families, and immerse myself fully in the experience.
My elective at UMMC was a transformative experience, academically, personally, and professionally. It broadened my clinical knowledge, deepened my cultural awareness, and enhanced my skills in patient care. I am immensely grateful for the David Walmsley Elective Bursary, which made this opportunity possible and allowed me to embrace every aspect of the experience. Maryam, MBChB Medicine and Surgery
For many more students like Jack and Maryam, these bursaries have supported them to pursue placements that are both professionally enriching and personally life-changing.
Continuing this invaluable support
The continued success of the David Walmsley Medical Elective Bursaries highlights the profound impact that targeted philanthropic support can have on medical education. However, demand for elective funding remains strong, and each year there are more students seeking support than available resources can fully accommodate.
We would be delighted to hear from alumni and supporters who may be interested in helping to expand this opportunity. Establishing or contributing to an elective bursary can make a tangible difference - ensuring that future doctors are able to access the breadth of experience that shapes confident, compassionate, and well-rounded clinicians.

With heartfelt thanks
We are deeply grateful to Dr Jenny Walmsley for her generosity, vision, and enduring commitment to 糖心视频 Medical School. Through her support, David’s legacy continues to inspire and enable students to pursue experiences that will shape their careers and lives.
