Research Overview

I am a historian of the built environment, with a special interest in the relationship between cities and water. I trained as an architectural historian at the University of Edinburgh and as an urban historian at the University of Leicester, and have published in Environmental History and Urban History. I have pursued research projects on the British Empire in the Nile Valley and the southern North Sea in the nineteenth century, and am currently working on monographs based on each of these projects. I am one of the editors of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Modern Infrastructural History. My work has been funded by the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust and the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain.
