Joint PGR Citizenship Award for STOR-i student
The PGR Citizenship Prize for PhD students in the School of Mathematical Sciences has been awarded to STOR-i PhD student Malcolm Connolly and Maths PhD student Joseph Price, in recognition of their contributions to the research culture of the department.
Malcolm was nominated for his significant contribution to the creation and development of the People and Planet research group, an informal broad-church research group for academics and PhD students interested in applications of Statistics to Social, Environmental and Ecological Science. Meeting once a fortnight, the group saw talks from both staff and students within the university, and external speakers - including from the University of Iceland. They also organised a reading group among the PhD students on methodology relevant to their research and learned about Hidden Markov Models together.
Malcolm commented: “I am very grateful to have been awarded this prize, and it has really been a privilege to facilitate. A big thank you is due to those who came to support the seminar series, especially those who gave a talk last year.”
Dr Carolina Euan, one of Malcolm's PhD supervisors, commented: "This is a well-deserved prize because Malcolm goes beyond what is expected and is highly motivated to lead activities that support and enhance the research environment."
Malcolm will continue to lead the People and Planet research group in the coming academic year.
